Blue Board

Styrofoam is a closed-cell extruded foam made of thin-walled, air-filled bubbles of polystyrene, commonly called Blue Board. It is manufactured for thermal insulation used in walls, roofs,as a water barrier. The boards have a papery, corky texture.

Fascination for the invisible

Once I went to a hardware store to buy light bulbs and saw some styrofoam boards randomly stacked in a corner and absolutly inconspicuous – kind of invisible for any other customers. For me, those pure, light blue, untrimmed boards were just pure visual poetry.

Visual power

Therefore I created visual styrofoam compositions and captured those in photographic still lifes. I studied the board’s structure, their haptics and sound when they fracture, are rubbed against each other or collide. The visual power coming from those simple materials and its pureness just fascinated me.
